A Taste of the South China of old
Category: Restaurant and Cuisine Date: March 2008
The restaurant 28 HuBin Road is located off the lobby of Hyatt Regency Hangzhou. Decorated with old blue stones laid in graceful curves, the elegantly designed restaurant brings you images of ancient Jiangnan, (the Chinese name for the area south of the Yangtze River), and its food reflects the region’s delicate and refined flavors.
Cultural artifacts fill the interior. There are ‘dou’ (traditional rice containers made of wood); the walls are covered with patterned cloths of various shapes and sizes; and the tables are made from huge century-old wooden doors. The restaurant manages to carry a modern feel with the addition of contemporary western touches.
It offers Hangzhou, Huaiyang and Suzhou dishes, typical of the water towns in the Jiangnan region. West Lake lotus root (RMB 28) is a tasty and particularly healthy choice. Beneficial for the stomach, spleen and heart, in folklore, its curative effect is said to be even stronger than the healing hands of a doctor. Picked from Hangzhou’s West Lake, the lotus root is served in beetroot juice, and can be cooked or eaten in its raw form.
Dongpo pork is one of Hangzhou’s most well known dishes, but despite its reputation, many people turn their noses up at the fattiness of the pork. The chef at 28 Hubin Road serves this famous dish on a bamboo and chestnut pancake using a special cooking method to reduce the amount of fat in the meat. It also contains plenty of bone collagen protein, which is good for anti-aging, so you can eat it without worrying about your health or your waistline.
28 HuBin Road is a favorite restaurant of all kinds of people, from elderly overseas Chinese showing their grandchildren the ‘home’ flavors that they grew up with to curious foreigners looking for the exciting tastes and textures of unusual dishes. The restaurant’s friendly atmosphere and cultural backdrop also make it a good venue for weddings and parties.
