Feng Shui (wind and water) has been widely practiced in Asia for thousands of years. It is thought that everyone is born with three types of luck; luck from heaven, from earth and from one’s individual self. Luck from heaven is believed to be beyond our power but we can control luck from the earth, which is known as ‘Feng Shui’. Feng Shui helps you to gain recognition, earn respect from your colleagues, brings luck to your family and can even make you rich. Chinese symbolism originates from the ‘I Ching’ and its principles of Yin and Yang and the five elements must always be taken into account when using Feng Shui methods.
For the Feng Shui necklace I chose symbols which related to my childhood spent in Japan. My Japanese grandmother taught me many wonderful things about the significance of symbols and as a small child I saw them everywhere; in temples, books, paintings, kimonos and obis, hair ornaments, fabrics and furniture. This respect for symbols still exists throughout Asia and Feng Shui continues to play an important role in people’s lives.
Celestial creatures like the dragon, phoenix and unicorn are among the most commonly known symbols but it is unclear as to whether these animals have ever really existed. Earthly symbols such as the horse, elephant, tiger and leopard are used for protection, and the twelve animals of the zodiac also feature prominently in Feng Shui. There are also good luck plants and auspicious fruits and flowers.
Chinese coins, ingots and the three-legged toad are used as powerful symbols of wealth together with the colors gold and red.
Feng Shui also uses a play on words to convey the hidden meanings in images. For example, the word for “fish” means abundance and “bat” means good fortune. This interplay相互作用 of pronunciation and puns explains why certain creatures and plants are seen as auspicious.
The theory of the Five Elements states that all things in the universe belong to an element; fire, wood, water, metal or earth which interact with each other in never-ending cycles. If used subtly they reinforce each other and if two objects in the same element group react with each other, the effect is magnified.
